Famous Last Words Week 15

Here's a little Gratitude for you............

Graduation Cap

Well as this semester winds down there is only one last thing for me to do and that is Graduate. Now that I have my cap and gown, I have all the invites sent, and there is less than two weeks till commencement I am left with the thoughts of all the things I have experienced in my college years, and may I add I have had a lot of years. In the 1990’s I began college at what was then known as Seminole Jr. College. I had always figured I would goto college, I just never knew that I would take this long to do it. When I went to Seminole I can say one of the things that I experienced was sitting in a history class and back then there were not cell phones, so information traveled a little slower. We even had tape decks to record the lectures. Back to the point I was sitting in class and people were coming in and sitting down but it was not the normal attitude in the air that most days was pretty relaxed and friendly. Today people were talking about some building in Oklahoma City that had blown up. I had never heard of the building and at the time people immediately knew it was some sort of terror attack, although most of us thought it was foreign and not domestic. Immediately after class that day I went home and turned on the news. What most people don’t forget is that originally there was a man known as John Doe #2, not Terry Nicoles but another man that they never caught or believe may have never existed. I dropped out of college at the end of that semester. One of the reasons was because I failed English comp 2 for a second time. Back in those days’ windows was not as advanced as it is today. Spell-check was hit and miss and in my hurry to print up my final paper in the class I didn’t print up the corrected version of the story and because of that I failed due to too many misspelled words, thus I received and F in the class. The previous semester I had been in a car wreck and was failed because of too many missed days. A few years later I went back to school and took English comp 2 again, but at that time I was more interested in drinking and having a good time than school and I once again failed because of lack of attendance. When I turned 31 I was dating the woman of my dreams. I was so in love and well she dumped me. After I hung up the phone I looked at myself and thought “Wow I am 31 years old, a bartender, and I have no education. No wonder she dumped you. You have no future.” I became so angry that I was determined to prove her wrong so I enrolled in a math class at Seminole St. College the next day and started going to class. The next semester I transferred to Rose St. College and I once again took English comp 2. Once again I failed the class and was forced to withdraw from it. The following semester I was determined so I enrolled once again into the same teachers class and this time I was placed into a group project. The young students I was placed in were terrific students as well as people. Together we came together and created a project that I am most proud of about hate crimes. Not only were these projects part of our final grade, well actually they were our entire grade, but they were also a competition. I loved seeing the look in the professor’s eyes as she had to hand me my reward for Best project. Seeing the look in her eye was important because there were some issues that the professor and I had that I felt and still feel went far beyond her professional boundaries. To put it bluntly I hated the professor and she hated me, and it was absolutely no secret. After that I transferred to OU. When I arrived at OU I was in heaven. I was at my dream school and I was finally perusing my degree. One of the first classes I took was a class on Islamic Law by Dr. Vishanahoff. I mention this because after my second week in class I received an email from him that would inspire me throughout the rest of my time at OU. I received an email and I am paraphrasing it, but the basic point was that I talked too much and the things I had to say were dumb and if I didn’t stop I would not pass the class. This forced me to look inward at how I project outward to people and make changes. By the end of the semester I had received an A in the class and to this very day Dr. Vishanahoff is one of my favorite professors. He has no clue about how much he improved my college experience and for that I will always be grateful to him. I took a few years off and returned in the summer of 2013 to finish school. That summer I was introduced to the world of Native American language. I took Cherokee. The professor was Prof. Armer. She is one of the most amazing people I have ever met and I feel that she is truly everything that a college classroom environment should be about. I am so grateful for the time was able to spend in her class and all the many times she put up with me in her class. Truly an amazing professor. With the exception of my poetry professor all my college professors here at the University of Oklahoma have been exceptional. Kim Roppolo, Laura Gibbs, Joe Sullivan, Christopher Carter, Dr. K, Kenneth Hodges and the many others that have been a part of my college career I owe a great deal of gratitude to because even though they may not be away of it, they have helped me in my personal life. They have each forced me to get the best out of myself and for that I thank them and will always honor the time I was able to share with them. So what I guess I am trying to say is that it has been a long road but I made it and I really just want to say thank you to all my professors with the exception of my poetry writing professor…..Thank you guys!!!!!!!!!!

Online Education Review Week 15

I have taken a ton of online courses in my time here at OU and by far this class along with the one I took in the previous semester are the most time consuming. When I a student takes an online course one of the things that they do expect is that there is a somewhat self pace aspect of the class. That being said one of the bonuses about this class is that because you are forced to engage with it on what feels like 29 hours a day you are flooded with a ton of creative stories to read that you might have not taken the time to read in a normal online course. In this class there is no escaping the reading assignments because you have diaries that are due so in order to do the diaries you must read the stories. Also there are other assignments that you must complete and if you don’t do your diaries then you will not be allowed to complete the other assignments. I will admit that there are times throughout the semester when the work seemed very redundant, examples like writing a diary, then a story, and finally an essay but I think it is important for some writers to go through these steps as part of their creative process. For myself one of things I would remove from this class is all the dang pictures. I think they are important for the storytelling posts, but for the other assignments I think there would be no issue if the pictures were removed. Another thing that would be interesting is that as I have already mentioned that there were times that things seemed a bit too much of the same each week to maybe change things up half way through the semester by removing the reading diary assignment and adding another storytelling assignment. I think one way that you could really foster creativity is to make the students write two story telling posts but to have them write the posts over the same story, then for the essay assignment during the week have them talk about the challenges that they faced when trying to write two different tales based off the same story. I think that would break up the monotony and really make things pop off creatively. Over all I loved this class and I would recommend it to all students. The Professor is extremely enthusiastic about the material which is really refreshing because I have been in classes on campus where the professor seems asleep and simply on cruise control during lectures. This professor seems so full of energy each week which makes the student want to continue to work hard and be engaged in this class.

College Writing Review Week 15

Pencil

I am an English major with a focus in the writing track not lit and cult so writing plays a huge part in my college experience. One of the things that I have learned over the past twelve semesters is that although there are rules to proper writing, there is not proper way to write. I think one of the things that I love most about writing is the freedom a person has to express their view points on subjects that they choose. One of the things that this class allowed me to do most is to experiment with different writing styles to help me develop my voice. It was not the storybook or the diary assignments that I enjoyed most, instead it was the storytelling and the famous last words assignments that allowed me to be the most creative. I would say that as a total my college experience has taught me to just write and express myself the way I feel like doing so.

Famous Last Words Week 14

Here is a little something for you to ponder........

I started writing this last semester and this is a revised version....This is a little thing I like to call

Joshua Peavey Destroys the Universes

The Universe

Joshua Peavey was an extraordinary man of mediocre aspirations. Through his average work over his average life he had earned a successfully modest job in middle management at the Hope Springs Water Bottling and Distribution plant in the town of Jonas, Oklahoma. Though some would describe his management style as “Jerkish,” Joshua Peavey would refer to it as “Stern.” The rules were the rules and if one of his employees broke the rules there would be consequences. Regardless of that one thing was for certain, that Joshua Peavey was a creature of habit and relished the opportunity for the monotonous work that his job as floor supervisor gave him.

Being a creature of habit, that was habitually Jerkish to people made for a very recluse, or as Joshua would describe it “Cautiously reluctant to engage in personal relationships with people,” lifestyle. Each morning Joshua would get up at 6 a.m. and drink one pot of coffee, then he would shower for exactly twenty minutes, get dressed for work, be there by 7:45 a.m., clock in at 8 a.m., wait for people that showed up late so that he could hand them a write up, spend the rest of the time until noon avoiding ways to interact with his employees, eat a tuna fish sandwich for lunch, wait by the clock to see who returned late from lunch so he could write them up, hide in the bathroom till 4p.m. at which time he would clock out, and then he would go home for an evening of Shark Tank reruns and chicken pot pies until finally around 8p.m. he would go to bed. This routine had never changed once in fifteen years. Not for his birthday, not for Christmas, and certainly not for visitors to his house.

In the fifteen years that Joshua Peavey had lived at 420 N. High Ave. in Jonas, Oklahoma his door bell had never been used. So it is no wonder that this morning when the doorbell echoed through his unspectacular house Joshua spilt his morning coffee on his pants. The doorbell continued to rain terror through his house as Joshua jumped up from his chair to blow on his pants legs where the coffee had spilled.

“HOLD ON! I’M COMING!”

Joshua opens the door to a slender built tall man with tan skin, a five o’clock shadow, and a hair line much younger than his, “Oh thank God! It’s you!”

“Yes it is, I’m me, but who are you?”

The man enters Joshua’s house walking past him and heads for the kitchen. “I smell coffee. Where are the cups? Never mind that I can find them, sit down Joshua.”

“Wait, how do you know my name? And what are you doing in my house? Get out of here.”

“Man you were right he is kind of a jerk.”

“I’m right about who?”

“Not you! Us, look just sit down and we’ll explain everything.”

“What the freak is going on? I’m not going to sit down; you need to get the heck out of here before I call the police.”

“Yeah, Yeah, I know you were right, well I wasn’t wanting to do this but,” the man pulled out a revolver and pointed it at Joshua, “sit down in that gosh darn chair or I’m going to shoot you. Well of course I’m not going to shoot him guys we need him. Well yeah I guess I could shoot him in the leg, but do we really want to, I mean it will probably slow us down. Yeah you’re right we have to show him we mean business so I guess maybe like… the foot could work.” The man pointed the revolver at Joshua’s foot and a thunder rumbled through the house.

“WHAT THE FREAK IS WRONG WITH YOU MAN?”

“Shoot I missed. Hey bro hold still this aiming aint easy you know,” the man said as he pointed the gun at Joshua’s foot once again.

“NO! NO! WAIT, WAIT! Hold on I’ll sit down, I’ll sit down.” Joshua sat down in the chair next to his kitchen table. “Look I’m sitting down, just put that thing away.”

“Cool man. Look I am sorry about all this, it’s just we need your help.”

“Who is ‘WE’ and who do you keep talking to?”

“We is me and me is we….Look it’s complicated and hard to explain but just sit back and watch this.” The man pulled out his phone and hit the send button….

“Ever had one of those days that nothing makes sense, and then something happens and everything makes sense but nothing seems to make sense. I hate this place, there is nothing but empty space, and the birds, I should have listened to the birds. Now I got this rock under my foot, and a bunch of empty space to look at, just me and his empty space. I'm sorry, what was I saying, oh yeah the day. The day that the universes were destroyed leaving just this empty space. Empty space and me. Let's go back a little

It was a today, and I was late for work, although really time doesn't seem to hold the same meaning to me as it did once, but I'll get to that, anyway watch this.

I’m pulling into the car lot and Jason is standing in his normal spot at the entrance. It seems like that guy never moves. There’s a rumor that he was once a lady's man, but that must have been a long time ago because now he just looked like sunburned flesh in a cheap suit and sunglasses. He never takes off his sunglasses and come to think of it he never comes inside. Rumor has it that he made Chad, the general manager, mad at him one day and every since he was forced to sit out in the sun to greet customers, though I have never heard him say a word.

Look see there I am walking into the showroom floor. I walk into my office and sit down at my desk. The picture of a family hanging up on my wall falls. It doesn’t really matter to me that the picture falls except that now when I have a customer I can’t use the picture of the family to relate to them.

Around noon I leave my office and go outside to have a smoke. This is part of my daily ritual, after my smoke I would usually go to lunch and then come back to work and try to find a car to take a nap in without anyone noticing. See look at those birds. Those Freaking birds.

Stupid birds, why didn't I listen to these stupid birds, they were telling me the entire time what not to do, but I wouldn't listen, they just sounded like a bunch of cawing to me. See they are cawing at me, so much cawing that I go inside without finishing my smoke.

It’s hot outside so I’m going to the break room to get a bottled water. It was Todd's water. I know this because it was clearly labeled as his with a note that read, ‘Do Not Drink,’ and here is where I screw everything up. I should have listened to the darn cryptic birds, but no see, there I am I just untwist the top and tilt the bottle up to quench my thirst. I’m not a thief I figure I can replace the water before Todd notices it is gone, besides see there I am walking into the break room, no wait I’m opening the refrigerator, is that me drinking Todd's water. What were the birds saying? Oh I hate this part this is where it all goes black. See there I go, I’m passing out. My brain must have been overloaded with the universes.”

“Wait. How am I seeing all of this? It’s like, I don’t know it feels like it is in my brain.” Joshua is understandably confused.

“Oh that, well yeah the Cloud.”

“Like in the sky? Those clouds.”

“No…..Like your smartphone. You know the Cloud.”

“So wait, your phone is beaming these images directly into my brain?”

“No the Cloud is-“

“Yeah the Cloud, from in your phone-“

“No the phone is just a phone.”

“So what’s the Cloud?”

“The Cloud is the Cloud.”

“That makes no freaking sense.”

“It makes perfect sense, anyways where was I? Oh yeah I remember, it was that feeling, like a thousand needles pricking my entire body. That moment between being unconscious and about to come to, when the universes were playing with my mind.”

“Why do you keep saying universes?”

“I’ll get to that in a minute, but I started to remember things that I had long forgotten. It was Janet, yeah that was her name, Janet Thompson, and the summer before my senior year of high school.

The preacher came to my house and demanded that I go to the church camp. My dad, but I never had a dad--that is not important, my dad was a bible thumper who never questioned the preacher. I had never gone to church, I never saw the need for it, in fact one of my other brothers, but he wanted me to go, was saying something about my souls and saving them from something or another. It never made much sense until…..well now, but I’ll get to that, anyway my brother Lance and I went to this church camp in the southern part of Oklahoma.

I don’t remember it being this hot, and I remember having longer hair. Things are like that now, all the things I remember are different, it is like I am watching everything happen all over again and the things are the same… but different. Well not everything, take Janet for example. Here I’ll show you, see there I am in the Tabernacle, I should be wearing shorts and a tank top but I’m not, yet she is the same. Look at her, so beautiful. Long onyx hair, with olive skin, and emerald eyes sitting in the choir behind the preacher. Even now as I watch it I can’t hear what he is saying, because somewhere between thou shalt not steal and thou shalt not lie she has me captivated. Oh wait yeah, hey look, here it is. This is the moment when she melted me in this heat. See look any moment now she is going to take her left hand and move her hair behind her ears, look up and make eye contact with me and smile. This is my favorite part of this memory, well not memory, but I swear it is like looking at the moon in the night sky and suddenly realizing there are stars. See the moment passes; no matter how many times I come to this moment time keeps moving forward. This is my fifth time here and every time it is the same, well not exactly the same, I look different each time but basically it is the same. I never saw her again the rest of the week, just that one time in the Tabernacle.”

“Ok….Stop for a second. This is all just a little too crazy. I don’t know what is going on here, I’m not entirely sure how I am seeing all this”

“I told you, you’re seeing it through the Cloud—“

“Shut up about the Freaking Cloud….I don’t know what it is, I am pretty sure you don’t know what it is, and I am pretty sure this stuff aint healthy for me. Look man you gotta get out of here, I am sorry, but I have listened or watched or whatever the hell that was, but I did it and now I think you should leave. I mean I don’t even know who you are”

“Well we’re Neal.” Neal gets up from his chair, grabs Joshua’s coffee mug and walks to the kitchen counter where the coffee pot was sitting. “Look just relax and have another cup of coffee.”

“NO! I don’t want another cup of coffee, I need you to leave so I can goto work then come home and forget that I have ever met you.”

“Work? I don’t think you understand. Your work doesn’t exist anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“Look forget all you know about time, space, and the universe. You know how when you were a kid you were told that time and the universe was infinite, well that is not true, well not entirely true. Time is not infinite or a loop. It is a series of straight lines that form a box. Inside this box is group of universes, nine to be exact. In the middle of this box is the cloud. It holds all the information in it about the different universes and keeps all this shit separated so that none of the universes touch each other. So what you were seeing is not memories, but things happening in real time within the different universes. Unfortunately you went and fracked this all up and now everything has gone to shit.”

“What do mean I fracked everything up? What could I have done?” Joshua reached out to grab the cup of coffee from Neal, “This doesn’t make any sense.”

“Just drink your coffee and watch all of this.” Neal once again hit send on his phone.

“Ok we are back where we started, but something’s different, look I have a beard now and I look like I’ve been in the wilderness and I remember it being sunny, but it is raining and what is my brother Lance doing there with me, I mean I don’t even have a brother. See what I mean nothing makes sense, even though it is all so familiar.

The birds there they go again, what are they saying, I think I can understand them; I know I need to listen to them.

‘We know who you are, the water, the water, the zoo, the mall, we know who you are’

Ok now I understand. Where did I go? Oh there I am by that car that just pulled in, is that who I think it is, oh my god it is, it’s Janet Thompson. Look at her, she looks exactly the same. Nothing about her is different, still so stunning, I can barely catch my breath from looking at her.

Dang it I keep losing myself. Where do I keep going? Oh here I come, look I have the same clothes on but my face is different. See look I just tripped and knocked the picture off the wall, but that isn’t how I remember it happening. Are you beginning to understand? The universes are touching each other, causing stuff that happens in one of them to affect things in the other.”

“Yeah I’m starting too, but what has any or this got to do with me?” Josh is definitely not starting to understand.

“Well Josh you’re kind of a jerk.”

“How?”

“Well what did you do last month at work?”

“Same thing I always do. I went to work, I clocked in, and I did my job.”

“No, you went to work and clocked in and then like a freaking Nazi you wrote up Dale for being three minutes late.”

“Well he was late what was I supposed to do?”

“I don’t know let it slide a little, maybe understand that he may have had a good reason. I mean because after you did that the guy dumped an entire bottle of his anti-depressants into one of the water bottles. The same water bottle that I drank.”

“What?” Joshua sits back in his chair and takes another sip from his coffee cup.

“And because of that it happened in all the other universes which set off a chain reaction that overwhelmed the cloud and now all the universes are crashing into one another.”

“Well if all the universes are at different points in time then shouldn’t one you be able to get to me before I write Dale up and stop him? I mean I assume that when you say ‘We’ that means that you can communicate with your other selves in the different universes.”

“Yeah that would be great if you weren’t what you are.”

“What do you mean?”

“You are unique. You don’t exist in any of the other universes except this one. So the only way to stop you is to send you back in time.”

“Oh I see. Yeah this makes perfect sense. So I go back in time and then I find myself and let me guess, I’m supposed to say something like ‘John Connor. Come with me if you want to live.’ C’mon man, get the freak out of my house.” Joshua stood up and walked to the front door.

“Well this is probably the easiest way. Go ahead open the door Josh. Take a look outside and look at what you have done.”

Josh turns the door knob and opens the door. He falls to his knees as he is met with images of a burning sky and pockets of blank nothingness. His street that was once a neighborhood that seemed frozen in time from the 1960’s was now littered with skyscrapers alongside of houses missing their white picket fences.

“What is all of this?” Josh begins to tremble as he sees his neighbors houses begin to vanish from reality. “What have I done?”

“I told you. Now do you believe me?”

“Yeah…………. How can I change this? What can we do?”

Neal hands Josh his coffee cup. “First thing you can do is finish drinking your coffee and then we can head to the mall.”

Josh robotically sips his coffee. In between sips he asks, “Why the mall?”

“Because that is where the time portal is, so we gotta go there and kill some teenagers.”

“What? Wait why?”

“Because the teenagers are evil and they are guarding the portal for their master Bob.”

“So teenagers are evil?”

“Well no not all of them, just the one’s in skinny jeans with their neon colored sunglasses, t-shirts with pop culture references from the 90’s that are meant to be ironic, and their long boards.”

“Long boards? You mean skateboards? Like Tony Hawke?”

“No not like Tony Hawke. Tony Hawke is awesome. We’re not going to kill Tony Hawke. What the frack is wrong with you? Why do you wanna kill Tony Hawke?”

“I…I don’t—“

“Haven’t you been paying attention? Look just get in the darn car. You don’t even gotta worry about the teenagers the monkey army will take care of them.”

“Monkey army?”

“Seriously, have you not been paying attention? Yes the monkey army. What do you think the birds were telling you? Monkeys hate teenagers, so the birds went to the zoo to release the monkey army and they are going to meet us at the mall. All we have to do is get past Bob, who by the way is a total doucher, and then you jump into the time portal inside the Hot Topic.”

“There is a time portal in the Hot Topic?”

“Where do you think they get the shirts? Haven’t you ever wondered why the Hot Topic always looks like no one shops there and yet it is still open? It is because Bob sends the teenagers back in time to the 1990’s to steal shirts and shit from the past and bring them back to present time. Then they sell these shirts to people. There is almost zero overhead. Bob keeps his evil army of teenagers loyal by giving them shirts, hats, and jewelry. All we have to do is have you sneak into the portal and then you can stop all this shit from happening. Now get in the darn car.”

The two men get in the car and drive to the mall. Joshua Peavey sits silent throughout the entire car ride. He allows his mind to contemplate everything he has witnessed today. This outstanding man of mediocrity begins to wonder if he is up to the task, and furthermore he is hungry. His stomach growls as he begins to think of a Gyro. This is natural after all because he is headed to the mall, and one of his favorite places in the mall is the Gyro Pit Stop. There was something in the way that the cooks would slice the meat. It always looked so moist and the memory of the smell of the goat and lamb mixture only seemed to encourage his stomach to riot within his body. He would always ask for extra cucumber sauce to smother on the flat bread filled with meat, lettuce, tomato, and onion. In a life of average aspirations that would soon come to an end should he fail, Joshua Peavey found a desire to succeed that had never before touched his life so that the perfection of a Gyro would not disappear from reality. This is what he thought of most during the fifteen minute ride to the mall.

The two men arrive at the mall and park the car. “Why are you parking this far away from the mall? The place is empty. There is a spot right next to the entrance.” Joshua says as he points to the closest parking spot to the mall entrance.

“I can’t park there, it’s a handicap parking spot.”

“Who freaking cares Neal. Look around The place is empty.”

“So what if it is? It is still a handicap parking spot and it’s a jerk move to park there.”

“Are you freaking kidding me? We are about to go in here and kill a bunch of teenagers and you’re worried about parking in a handicap spot?”

“One, they are evil teenagers, two the monkeys are going to kill them, and three what if some handicapped person comes along and needs that parking spot and they can’t have it because we are parked in it?”

“THEN THEY CAN PARK IN THE HANDICAP SPOT RIGHT NEXT TO IT!”

“See, it is that attitude that is the exact reason that you are a jerk and I am not.”

Neal turns off the engine to the car and he and Josh get out and walk to the entrance. Neal zig zags back in forth in the empty parking lot so that he can’t be seen. Joshua walks in a straight line. They pause for a moment at the glass doors that lead into the mall.

“Hey why don’t you shut the heck up?” Neal says to the other Neals in his head. “No I’m not talking to the Neals in my head. I’m talking to you.”

Ummmmmmm. Me?

“Yeah you. Shut the heck up. You know we are trying to sneak in here and save the universes from total annihilation and it makes it a little hard with you constantly narrating every little thing we do. On top of that you are not very good at this, honestly bro you are a little bland and short on imagery”

Oh….

“Yeah and by the way I don’t appreciate some of the things you said about me earlier. I’m not average or mediocre.” Josh says, “There you go again. I know who said it. I said it. I don’t need you telling me who said what. It is just me and him here, so if someone says something and I didn’t say it I am going to go ahead and assume it’s that guy.”

Well I kinda have too narrate…

“But do ya?”

Yes Neal I do…Well what if I just whisper? Would that work?

“I guess.” Neal says

“Yeah, that’s a little better.” Joshua says.

The two men make their way to the Hot Topic. The monkey army and the evil teenagers had already started fighting when Josh and Neal arrived at the front doors of the Hot Topic. The tile floor of the mall was covered in a blend of teenage and monkey blood as the two armies’ waged war throughout the mall. The mall was flooded with the sounds of monkey roars, long boards being smashed, and Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond playing on the mall’s Muzak system.

The two men were met at the Hot Topic entrance by a forty year old slender man dressed in all black cargo pants with a chain that went from his front belt loop to the wallet in his back pocket, polished metal rings on each of his fingers, spiked hair, and a shirt with Super Mario on the front. This was Bob, the general manager of Hot Topic store # 665 located in the Culture Memorial Mall in Jonas, Oklahoma.

“What do we have here?” Bob says as he sees Neal and Josh. “Neal, what are you doing? Is this about Janet?”

“No this aint about Janet.”

“Look man, she doesn’t want you. Move on. This is a bit sad you know.”

“To heck with you Bob.” Neal begins to walk towards Bob with malice intent when a voice from behind Bob stops him.

“Neal? OMG!” Even Joshua recognizes this face. It is Janet. “Why are you here? I told you it’s over. Stop bothering me.”

“SCREW YOU JANET! No one gives a darn about you!” Obviously Neal is lying.

“Obviously you are lying. Look man just move on. I understand it’s tough to see her with a real man.”

“Shut up Bob! You’re forty years old and you work at the Hot Topic. I mean who wants to work at a Hot Topic when their forty, shoot who wants to work at a Hot Topic when they’re twenty-five?”

“Hey as manager I get paid ten dollars an hour, I have my own parking spot, free layaway, and a fifteen percent store discount.”

“Who cares Bob?”

“I’m sorry Neal, but are you sure this has nothing to do with Janet. I mean you didn’t mention anything about her and Bob at my house earlier.”

“Look around man. The universes are collapsing. Do you think I care about her right now? C’mon man that’s just stupid.”

Janet holds up her cell phone, “The why have you been texting me all day. Stop already. Seriously it’s sad like LOL enough.”

“I’m sorry did you just say ‘LOL’ instead of laugh out loud?” There is a look of disgust on Joshua’s face. “You do realize that that LOL and laugh out loud have the same exact amount of syllables, so there is no reason to verbalize the abbreviated version of the phrase. What I’m trying to say is you sound dumb. You know YSD.”

“W.T.F! You’re a jerk.”

“Again no need to abbreviate that phrase. Can we have the monkeys kill her Neal?”

“Josh just relax. Bob look around, everything is disappearing and in another few minutes all of reality is going to be wiped out. This guy here is the only one that can stop it. I gotta send him back in time using your portal so that he can kill himself. So as much as I hate it I’m going to have to kill you so that we can save the universes.”

“Or…..You could just ask to use the portal.”

Neal realizes that Bob is right and that he could just ask to use the portal. In fact it would have been much easier if he had just asked to use the portal.

“What do you mean I have to kill myself?”

“Yeah, you have to kill yourself.” Joshua can tell from Neal’s face that he is being serious.

“Why do I have to kill myself? Why can’t I just tell myself not to write the guy up?”

“Well because you are kind of a jerk dude and there is no telling when you’re going to tick someone off and cause the all of reality to be destroyed. It’s better this way. I know it is a lot to take in, but you gotta take a hit for the team on this one. Now hurry up and get into the portal before the poison kicks in and it’s too late.”

“What do you mean poison Neal?”

“Oh yeah, well when I was at your house earlier I poisoned your coffee. It’s the only way to be sure to avoid all of this from happening.”

“You did what?” Josh can barely hold back his anger. “You poisoned my coffee? I’m dying? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKING MIND?”

“A little.” Once again Neal was not being honest. He is more than a little out of his mind, the stress of all his minds converging into one another had not only overwhelmed the Cloud, but it had caused him to have a psychotic break.

“And you, all day long we’ve had to sit through all your boring narration of every little thing we do. What you couldn’t have narrated that he was putting poison in my coffee? You’re terrible at this, I mean WTF! And the rest of you, well…… you are all a bunch of losers! You know what, I aint going to get in that portal. No! You know what I’m gonna do? I gonna go down to the food court and get a Gyro. Why? Because I’m hungry and they’re freaking delicious and all of ya’ll can go to you know where”

As Joshua bit into his Gyro with extra cucumber sauce he began to wonder anxiously to himself, “Did I leave the coffee pot on?” And as reality began to fade into nothingness all the people in all the collapsing universes agreed that… Joshua James Peavey is a jerk.

Essay Week 14

The Grimm Brothers

My reading this week was over the Grimm (Ashilan) Unit. I chose this unit because last week I read the hunt version of the Grimm tales and I wanted to see how the authors differed from one another. In this week’s reading I found that there was a difference in the size of each story. In the Hunt unit the reading were much longer and although they were good they seemed to have less stories. This unit kept the stories short and to the point. This allowed for a greater selection of the stories from the Grimm tales. There were a couple of stories that really stuck out to me.

The story about the wolf and the seven young kids seemed extremely familiar as I was reading it. It reminded me of the Three little pigs and the Big Bad wolf and I am not sure but I figure that this story probably inspired that fairy tale. There were notable difference between the Grimm story and the one I was read as a child. One of the main parts is the number of kids in the story. I was used to there being 3 pigs and in this story there were 7 goats. The wolf did trick the kids into letting them in much like the big bad wolf attempted to let them in and when the wolf got in he ate all but one of the kids and then there there was the scene in which the mother replaced the kids in the wolfs belly with stones and got away. For some reason this reminded me of Zeus and his father Chronos. I am sure there is not real parallel between the two that can be drawn but still it was a thought. I really like this story.

The other story that stood out to me was the little red cap. When I read this story I thought this might be a different tale than the little red riding hood story, but I guess this is the one of the original versions of the story. Even though I read the story knowing it quite well I still found it very enjoyable to read and I thought it was pretty cool to see that some of the stories that I was read as a child had different names originally. Overall I would recommend this unit.

Story Telling Week 14

The Cap and The Wolf

Little Red Riding Cap

Little Red Riding Cap loved her grandmother and her grandmother loved her. The red cap that she wore all day and night was made for her by her grandmother. It had been a while since little red riding cap had seen her grandmother so she decided to go see her. Her grandmother lived in the woods and it was a long and dangerous journey. Still little red riding hood was not scared so she set out to go see her grandmother.

Meanwhile elsewhere in the woods there was a huntsman hunting an big bad wolf. Now the wolf was smart and able to escape the hunter everytime the hunter got close. Still the hunter would not give up.

Back to the girl in the red cap that was on her way to see her grandmother. She was skipping along singing that she was on her way to see her grandmother when the wolf happened along her path and heard her singing. Now there is nothing that a wolf loves more than a meal except maybe two meals. He knew that if he went to the grandmothers house he would have a easy meal and if he waited there he would have another easy meal.

When the grandmother heard a knocking at her door she assumed it was her granddaughter so she opened it. When she did the wolf jumped in and swallowed her whole. The wolf decided to dress up as the grandmother because if he answered the door as the wolf the girl might escape, but she came in and got really close to the wolf then there would be no escape.

The little girl in the red cap known as little red cap arrived at her grandmothers house. She knocked on the door and someone inside who she assumed was not the big bad wolf but instead was her grandmother told her to come inside so she did.

The girl saw that her grandmother aka the big bad wolf in disguise was in bed and asked what was wrong and the wolf dressed up as her grandmother said it was cold and that she didn’t want to catch a cold. The wolf told the girl to come closer so the girl did.

The girl noticed that her grandmother had a pair of big eyes and even though it had been a long time since she had seen her grandmother she began to wonder why her grandmother’s eyes were so big. The wolf told her it was so he could see her better and told her to come closer. The girl did and by now the girl was sitting on the bed next to the wolf.

The girl noticed that her grandmother had really big teeth and wondered why her teeth were so big and the wolf told her they were big so he could eat her with them and swallowed the girl whole.

The hunter saw the house and figured the wolf had found a great hiding spot so he kicked in the door and found the wolf. He pulled out his ax and cut the wolf’s belly open killing the wolf and allowing the grandmother and little red riding cap to escape.

To celebrate the grandmother cooked up wolf stew and they all lived happily ever after.

Author’s notes
This is from Little Red Riding Cap in the Grimm Ashliman unit. I kept it pretty much to the script with this one and didn’t change too much. Another name for this story is Little red riding hood. I didn’t want to change too much because why mess with a good thing. I think there is just enough of my finger prints on this story so that I was able to put my own spin on it without changing much.

Famous Last Words Week 13

Here’s a little bit of Matrimony for you……

Love

So this past Friday my friend got married. I think marriage is an amazing thing for everyone. Well everyone except me. Maybe it is because I am a total prince in my head or maybe it is just because I am a total attention…hmmmm what’s the word I’m looking for….. but I have never been the one to want to get married. Still this was a great day to see my friend get hitched and the place was amazing. It was just outside of Norman in Goldsby, and the place was a Barn. This was no ordinary barn though, it had a helipad, the inside was absolutely amazing. It must have cost millions to build.

So I am sitting there and watching the bridesmaids make their way up front, and then the little flower girl comes out. Now I love kids because they are just honest. Nothing is too big a moment for them. The little flower proved this point. I am sure they practiced over and over again with her to walk up to the altar and toss flowers on the floor along the way. This little girl was having none of that. She stepped out and grabbed one handful dropped it on the ground and that was it. She said “Ta hell with this” and just walked up tossing no more flowers. I couldn’t help but laugh.

My laughter was soon changed to a grin the size of Alaska when my friend Kel Kel stepped out from behind the curtains. She was so beautiful. Not because of the dress, the hair, or the makeup, but because of how happy she looked. I have never seen my dear friend smile like this before. It was simply one of the most amazing feelings inside to see my friend look this happy. She wasn’t looking around. Her eyes were straight ahead focused on the man she was about to marry. Funny thing is I had never her soon to be husband, but I just had to catch a glimpse of the man that had put this amazing smile on my friends face. When I turned my head I saw the way he was looking at her. In my heart I could truly tell that this man was someone that truly loved my Kel Kel, now his Kel Kel with all his heart. I couldn’t have been more happy for them as they said their “I Do’s.”

Then it was time to party…..but that my friends is another story……

Essay Week 13

A Grimm Tale

I did the Grimm Tales Hunt unit for this week. This was a great unit because it had some stories that most readers would be familiar with and it also had some other stories that readers would not have heard of before. The version by Hunt was also a strong version because it had all the elements that a reader would have expected a Grimm story to have, Hunt did a great job of capturing the themes but also the feel of the stories (not sure if that makes sense). The pictures throughout the stories were also new to me, so I found them to be another interesting part of the Unit. This unit has something for everyone and the best thing about it is that I had fun reading these to my two little nieces over Skype so it was fun to bring these stories to a new generation.

Story Telling Week 13

The Little Ginger Boy
Gingerbread Family

There was once two Ginger people. They lived in a gingerbread house. They wanted a Gingerbread Family. They asked Hostess for a Ginger child. They told Hostess that even if the Ginger baby was only the size of a gumbdrop they would love him. So they oven was heated to 325 degrees and 90 minutes later a Gingerbaby the size of a gumbdrop popped out. The Gingerbread family was so happy.
They Ginger parents loved the Ginger boy with all their chalky candy valentine hearts. As a matter of fact their hearts even said “I love You,” well one of them said “You’re Great,” but all the rest of the Hearts said “I love you,” except for the ones that said, “Be Mine,” which is sorta the same.
One day the father was working in the Tootsie Roll garden and needed help. His son asked if he could help and the father said that he was too small, but the little boy insisted and eventually the father let him help. Soon enough a bunch of Nerds came a long and asked if they could have the Ginger boy that was the size of a gumbdrop. The father said no at first, but the little boy said it would be ok if the father gave him to the Nerds because he would soon return and then the father agreed.
The nerds all bounced around with excitement and they headed down the road with the Gingerbread boy. When the nerds were not looking the Ginger boy ran off and hid by the Hershey lake. The Nerds look high and low but could not find the boy. After a little while the Ginger Bread boy heard the laughing of some taffy so he went to see what was so funny. The taffy or better known as the Laffy Taffy were planning to break into the factory down the road from Willy Wonka’s place. After hearing what the Taffy were up to the Ginger Boy chimed in and told them that he could help. So off to the Right Side Twix factory they all went.
When they got to the Right Side Twix factory the Taffy Stretched up all the way to the top window and tossed the Ginger boy in to it. Once inside the factory the Ginger boy began to yell “The Left Side is here, they are trying to steal our secrets” and everyone in the factory came running to the window. The Laffy Taffy were scared of being caught so they ran. In the commotion the Ginger boy jumped into the wrapping paper and took a nap.
When he woke up he had been mistakenly wrapped up into one of the Twix Wrappers. Being as small as a gumbdrop afterall, no one had noticed. He began yelling from inside the wrapper and someone was scared. Being very superstitious Mr. Mars decided to shut down all the factory and ordered all the Twix opened and rewrapped. Just when the Ginger Boy was opened the Krispy Kreme army attacked and stole all the Twix candy from the factory.
The Ginger Boy knew he had to think quick so he started talking and soon one of the Kripsy Kreme soldiers noticed. He told the soldier where there were more Twix that were easy to capture, but he also told the soldier that if the whole army attacked that the soldier would not get any credit for the plan so it was best if the soldier went by himself.
Then next morning just before dawn the soldier and the Ginger boy in the Twix wrapper from the Right Side Twix factory just down the road from the Willy Wonka factory next to the Hershey lake left for the place where more Twix could be captured. The boy took the soldier to his house and told him the only way in was to jump down the icing chimney. They soldier was worried about the heat but the boy told him it would just be enough to warm him up and make him softer so he could fit down the chimney better. When they got into the house the boy screamed “Mom. Dad. I am home.” Both his parents came running so happy to see their little boy. The Krispy Kreme soldier was angry because he had been tricked, but that was no problem for the Ginger parents. All they did was eat him, because what is better than a warm Krispy Kreme donut first thing in the morning. And they all lived happily ever after.

Author's Notes
I based this on the Thumbling from the Grimm Stories. The story is about a little child born the size of a thumb. Two men buy him from his parents and he goes on an adventure and eventually ends up back home. I did change the story quite a bit, but still it is pretty true to the original. I invite you all to check out the grimm stories.

Reading Diary Part A Week 13

The Thumbling

I love all the Grimm tales. I was familiar with most, but the one I found really interesting because I have never heard of it was “The Thumbling.” A husband and wife want a child to liven up their house. The say that even a child as big as a thumb would be fine. The wife has a baby after nine months the exact size of a thumb. They love the child. The child grows up and wants to help his dad. He hops on a horse and talks in its ear and takes the horse to his father, who is working in the forest. Two men see him and buy him from his father. The boy is a trickster, and escapes the men by crawling into a mouse hole. Then he comes across two robbers looking for a way to steal someone’s riches and tells them he will help, when the men place him in the persons house he starts yelling to wake everyone up. The thumbling then falls asleep on some hay and then is eaten by a cow. In the cows belly he yells and the woman milking the cow is frightened and the cow is killed. When the thumbling is crawling out of the stomach of the cow, the stomach is eaten by a wolf. He tells the wolf he knows where there is more food and the wolf goes to a house and crawls in and eats all the food. When the wolf tries to leave he is too fat, and the boy starts yelling. This is his parent’s house and they hear him inside the wolf and kill the wolf and they all live happily ever after.

Robin Hood Ballads Essay Week 12

Movie Robin Hood

This week I read the Robin Hood Ballads unit. I think of all the units I have read so far that this was probably one of the most unique units. The entire unit was in song form, so reading it was like reading some old time poetry. I had a very Chaucer feel to it. One of the great things about this unit is that a lot of them had an embedded Youtube video of someone singing the ballads, so that added an extra dimension to this unit. I have always loved movies and tales that involved Robin Hood, so it was a no brainer for me to pick this unit. In the unit the stories that were presented were all pretty familiar to me so there were no real surprises for me as far a new knowledge. However, because they were in the forms of ballads I was able to enjoy these stories on a whole new level. Though they were in ballads they were not hard to understand or follow. The pictures in the unit were another part of the unit I enjoyed. Some of the artwork I had never seen before, actually most of it was new for me. I was always familiar with the Robin Hood I have seen in the movies so to come across other art work that was influenced by the legend, if that is accurate because there is some argument that he was an actual person, was interesting to me. I had never thought of the cultural effect that Robin Hood had on that region, but now after reading the stories in the unit, seeing the artwork, and hearing the songs it is clear that Robin Hood is as big a part of the culture as the Arthurian legends.

Story Telling Week 12

How Robin met John
Robin Hood and Little John Meet

Robin Hood needed a break so he left his men. He was just worn out from all the robbing of the rich and giving to the poor, not to mention the tights. The tights were way toooooooooo, well, tight. He wasn’t eating, he was stressed out, and he and Maid Marian had gotten into a quarrel over some young adult novel about, of all things Vampires. True story. So being that he was tired, he decided to take a walk.

As he was walking he wished he had a pair of Air Jordan’s instead of the ugly leather shoes that were so in fashion during that period. Still he did enjoy the walk because the fresh air helped to clear his mind. Not to mention it was fresh air, I mean have you ever been around a bunch of men in the woods, let alone a bunch of merry men?

Little John, around the same time that Robin Hood decided to take a walk also thought that he could use a break. Though he had not yet met Robin Hood, he had heard of him and had thought about his own life. He thought about all the time he had wasted eating, drinking ale, eating, and reading a dumb young adult novel about Vampires of all things. He was terribly embarrassed about it. The eating that is.

Robin came to a bridge and wanted to cross it, unfortunately for him, so did Little John. They both decided to cross the bridge at the same time. When they met in the middle the stopped and looked at each other. Now there was no need for either one of them to be in each other’s way, but it was customary in this day and age to for no apparent reason challenge a person to a fight when you saw them. Even though there was plenty of room for both the men to pass on the bridge, they were men of custom.

Now Robin Hood was a fair fighter. He had a sword and Little John had a wooden pole. Robin would never unfairly attack another man, unless that man had money or if that man was outnumbered, or if that man had money. Being that he was a fair fighter Robin threw down his sword and picked up a wooden pole.
The two men fought. Well not so much as fought as closed their eyes a swung wildly at one another. Little John knocked Robin in the water and as Robin stood there in the water soaking wet and still hating his tights and wishing he had a pair of Air Jordan 1’s looked up to see his merry men arrive not looking as merry as they could be looking.

They men readied to attack Little John, but Robin stopped them. He walked up to Little John and congratulated him on the duel and invited him to live with them in his camp. Little John asked about their supply of food and ale and when he found out they had plenty agreed to live with them. And that my friends is the very true story of how Robin Hood met Little John.

Author's Notes
This is a retelling of when Robin Hood met Little John from the Robin Hood Ballad Unit. Of course I did take quite a bit of license with this story, but the stories were in song form and there is a bit of humor to the stories so I tried to mirror that silliness in my story. The main aspects of the story all there. This is from the Ballad Little John.

Reading Diary Part B Week 12

Robin and Maid Marian

Robin comes across a Bishop and Robin is in disguise. The Bishop tells Robin that he is taking him to the king, and robin begs for mercy but the Bishop says no. Then robin blows his bugle and his men appear, the Bishop begs for mercy but robin says no. Then little john and Robin steal the man’s gold and make him dance while they escape.

A Woman hides Robin Hood from the Bishop. This is another retelling of how Robin robbed the Bishop. It is pretty much the same story but in this story Robin is dressed as an old woman I think. They rob the Bishop and Little John makes the Bishop sing so that they can escape.

This is the story of Robin and Maid Marian. The story starts out telling how rich and noble and beautiful Marian is. Marian goes into the woods looking for Robin. She is in disguise and so is Robin so when they meet they begin to fight. Robin admires her vallour. They both discover that each is in disguise after a while and then they celebrate. This story ends with Robin and Marian living together.

Reading Diary Part A Week 12

Robin Hood
The Robin Hood Ballads Unit

Oh These are in song form. So the first story has Robin hood drinking with his men when he finds out about the shooting contest. Robin boasts that he will hit the mark better than anyone. So Robin killed 14 men. Then Robin escapes.

I think I have heard this song before. The robin hood and little john. Talks about meeting little john when he was 20 years old. He was 7 ft tall. Robin hood leaves him men and goes into the forrest and then he came across little john on a bridge. John and Robin fight with one another. John knocks Robin into the water. I think Robins men show up and I believe that John and them fight or are about to fight. Then Little John is named by Robin and he joins Robin in the forrest.

Robin and John try to rod a pedlar and they tell him that they will steal half his stuff. The pedlar tells them they won’t. The pedlar and John fight until John surrenders. Robin laughs at them and says he can beat the pedlar. The pedlar and Robin fight until Robin surrenders. Robin and John and the Pedlar become friends.
In Robin hood Delight the story starts out talking about robin, john, and will.

They come across three men in the forest and there is an argument about something. Robin challenges them to a fight because they are cowards. Robin and his men could not beat the men. So they goto Nottingham and fight for three days and Robin still couldn’t get the men to give up. Robin says they are honorable and brave and they all become friends.

Famous Last Words Week 11

Here are some tearjerkers for you......

Movie Logo

So I have to admit I geek out when a new Fast movie is coming to theaters. I also do this with anything Marvel, Star Trek, and yes I am sitting up at night angry at J.J. Abrams from making me wait almost another year for the next installments of The Star Wars franchise. Put it simple....I FREAKING LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!

I'm weird in a way because I will go see a movie all by myself and think nothing of it. So when the new Furious movie came out, I went and saw it.

To be honest, the last movie was probably better. I think this has to do with the movie having to go through reshoots and having to splice the pieces of the movie together because of Paul Walker's death. This is completely understandable. Still, the movie was pretty AWESOME!!!!!

The ending is the part of the movie I wanna talk about, so Spoiler Alert, I am about to tell you the ending of the movie.

So the cast is sitting on the beach and Paul Walkers Character is playing with his kid and wife. They all just look at him and say that he is home. I almost didn't catch it at first but yeah this was their tribute to him. Then Vin Diesel gets up to leave and the new character asks him if he is going to say goodbye and he replies with "Never say Goodbye."

The movie ends with Vin driving down the road and there is a dialogue over this action talking about Paul Walker, by Vin Diesel. Then Vin comes to a stop sign and a a white car pulls up and it is Paul Walker and he says something like you were going to leave without saying goodbye, and then they race off. The two are going down the highway and the narration says something along the lines of you will always be my brother, and the road splits and the two cars take different paths....

The whole thing last probably about 5 minutes, and the entire movie is worth seeing just for those minutes. I can't lie, maybe it is because I love these movies or because as I get older I have become a big baby, but I teared up so much watching that scene.....Anyway I am sure I didn't do it justice, so go see the movie and tell me what you think.....

Story Telling Week 11

The Devil and the I.R.S.

I.R.S. Building

Walter was a small man. Small in every way. His eyes were small, his hands were small, and his aspirations in life were small, or rather short sighted. He worked as an auditor for the IRS. Most times when people asked what he did for a living he simply said he was in the financial business. He had never made many friends because being so short sighted he never really found it prudent or better yet appropriate to make room in his life for other people. Instead he chose to focus on gathering as much money as possible for the IRS, and a little on the side for himself.

One day Walter climbed into a cab at the same time as a stranger. The stranger was dressed in the same grey suit at Walter and even had the same small eyes. The stranger however was much more friendly and pleasant that Walter.

“Hello there buddy, I am Sam nice to meet you.”

Most times people just looked past Walter and rarely did they ever speak directly to him.

“Hello, I am Walter.”

Sam looked at Walter and noticed that they had the same grey suit and small eyes.

“We must be brothers,” Sam said to Walter. “What do you do for a living?”

Walter being embarrassed that he worked for the IRS replied, “Well what do you do for a living?”

“I’m in the financial business…Some would say I am a collector of money.” Sam answered.

“Me too.”

“Well then we must be brothers.”

Sam and Walter continued to talk about their business, and Walter began to grow fond of Sam. After all this was the only person that talked to Walter, well other than his mother, but she had too because Walter lived in her basement.

“Where are you from Sam?”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Yes.”

“Well let’s just say that I am from somewhere that is hot most of the time.”

“Oh, Florida. That sounds nice. What’s it like there?”

“Not what you would expect actually.” Sam said as he smiled.

The cab came to a stop and both of the men got out.

Sam said, “This is the building that I collect money at. I have to go see a man about a debt.”

“Do you mind if I come along?”

“Not at all,” Sam replied. The men stepped into an elevator and took it to the basement. In the basement there was a man working on a vending machine.

“This darn thing is always breaking, hey you guys can have this machine,” the vendor said.

“There you go Sam, looks like you own a vending machine.”

“No not really Walter, he doesn’t mean it. See watch.”

The man finished fixing the machine and closed it. “Well I guess I will keep it.”

“See Walter I told you.”

“Well I have to collect some money in this building.” Walter said.

“May I come with you?”

“Of course you can.” The two men took the elevator to the top floor of the building and then walked to a door. Walter knocked on the door and a lady answered. “I am from the IRS, and I have going to do an audit on you. I am going to find something wrong and you will goto jail, but we can make this all go away from $200 dollars.”

The lady said, “I don’t have that much money, and you can goto hell if you don’t stop lying and change your ways.”

Sam leaned in and asked the lady, “Do you mean that?”

The lady replied, “With all my heart.”

“Listen here lady give me that money or you are going to jail.”

Sam placed his hand on Walter and said, “hey relax, no need to collect any money from her, you are coming with me.”

Walter turned around to see that Sam had turned into the devil himself, in just enough time to wish he had not tried to cheat the lady as the devil dragged him to hell.

Author's Notes
This is a retelling of the Story of the Summoner from the Canterbury Tales Unit. The story is about a summoner that meets the devil and then is taken to hell by the devil for not repenting. I updated this story because the original version in the unit was so good that it was the only I felt I could retell this story with my own spin.

Reading Diary Part B Week 11

Geoffrey Chaucer

This is a new version I have never read before, so I am pretty stoked about diving into this unit. Most people are familiar with some of the Canterbury Tales such as the Miller’s Tale and a the Knights Tale, but I don’t see them listed here, the one familiar one I do see is the Wife of Bath’s tale. This is a great unit because it opens up the reader to the other tales they may not know about.

A lot of people have trouble with Chaucer because of the language. I have found these stories are easiest to understand when I read them out loud. This version is good because the translation is good throughout all the stories. The Author’s did a good job of remaining to true the originals while making the stories accessible to readers that may not have an English Degree and that is always a good thing.

One of the stories that really caught my attention because I have never heard of it before what the Story of the Summoner. This is a story about a summoner the meets I am guessing he Devil on a road. The two become friends and agree to share all the money they can get from people. The devil comes across a carter in the story but doesn't take his belongings because he doesn't truly offer it to him. The summoner wants to show off so he tries to force a woman to pay him money to avoid court, but he woman says she has done nothing wrong and says that she wants him to goto hell if he doesn't repent. The devil asks her if she means it and she says she does and takes the summoner to hell. The Summoner had been tricked into sharing all the money and prizes people would give them with the devil, so when the lady offered the devil the summoner the devil took him because he was a prize.

Famous Last Words Week 10

Here's a thought for you.......

Night Sower
Most of us are either graduating in a month or on our way to graduating. I only bring this up because I am probably one of the oldest people in this class. I’m surrounded by young people all the time so naturally I feel young, well that is till I look into the mirror and I see this old dude staring back at me. I just wanna say to the younger people, congratulations, you are what we call “Ahead of the Game.” Now if I could give any of you some advice, and please forgive and old man for becoming a bit preachy, it would be that along your journey into the real world you are going to come across a ton of people that will look at you with jealousy and envy. They will attempt to make you feel bad about your success and pity their lack of success. Don’t let them do that. You have worked hard to get to achieve your goals and a college education is just one step in that direction. That is what makes you different than other people you will meet in life.

See I have been extremely lucky in life. I have never had a hard time finding and keeping a job, and at most of my jobs I was lucky enough to be given plenty of opportunities. For the most part I took advantage of these opportunities as best I could. I say as best I could because I wasn’t prepared for success all of you will be, so I was only able to fake it as long as I could before my lack preparedness showed me the ceiling on my room of success.

I have had a high paying job as a Manager for one of the largest Chevy dealerships in the nation when I lived in Chicago. I have owned a small town restaurant. I was a bartender that saved his money and when the moment came was able to purchase the lease on a failing bar and turn it around. I had a mid paying job as a front of the house manager at a steakhouse. Those are just the highs of my work. There have been a ton of lows. I have worked in a nursing home, at the service desk at Wal-mart, and even now I just work as a server for a restaurant. What all this has taught me is that there is a ceiling. For the jobs I had there was no requirement other than a high school education and a willingness to put in a ton of hours each week. Even though a few of those jobs did pay well, once they were gone there was no guarantee that another similar paying job would be available. That is why I went to college, so that I never have to worry about that night to night, pay check to pay check life again. Even if the jobs we get out of college are low paying, at least there is a direction for our lives, a path to happiness.

What I mean by people detracting you along your way is that the person you are today, is much different than the person you were, and while people will see you with a nice house, car, and job and may think that you had it easy, what they will never be able to understand is all the hard work and sacrifice you have made to achieve those things. They will look down on you and think that you don’t have the same hard work ethic they do, when in fact, not only do you have a great work ethic, but you also have self control. Because as a young person it is easy to want things, and to chase that money so that you can have those things. Who doesn’t like to go out and enjoy life? But the truth is that you have put all those things on hold so that you can not only have those nice things, but also insure that those nice things will never be taken away from you. I have to commend you because as a young person I was one of those people that showed less than respectable self control. I wish I had the same mindset as you younger adults. Being here at this GREAT UNIVERSITY has taught me that you truly are an amazing group of people.

Two last bits of advice, not wisdom, but advice and then I will be done with this rant. Never allow someone’s excuse for their failure force you to make an excuse for your success. You have earned it. Remember these four words wherever you go in life….. I, LOVE, YOU, AND SMILE.

As I look back at that man in the mirror with the aged face and gray hair I am flooded with memories of my youth. And really, while a great job, money, and nice things are important, the most important thing is the memories. Some memories make me sad, and they will always be there, but what overwhelms them are the memories of when I told people “I LOVE YOU,” and all the times  when life made me SMILE…….
